Hoprigshiels windfarm proposal

On 6 July, I reported that the recent meeting of the community council had heard concerns from residents in and around Oldhamstocks about a proposal by Berwickshire Housing Association to build a windfarm at Hoprigshiels.  Chairman Chris Bruce had arranged a limited opinion survey that had produced inconclusive results.  Several local residents offered to assist in carrying out a more extensive survey, and I can now report the results of this.  A survey form was distributed locally and people were invited to complete and return the form, indicating their views.

The numbers of indivdual respondents expressing opinions were:-

Strongly opposed                        60

Tend to oppose                             3

Neither support nor oppose     15

Tend to support                           8

Strongly support                        24

This majority of respondents tending to oppose or strongly opposing has now been reflected in a letter sent by the Chairman on behalf of the community council to the Planning Department of Scottish Borders Council expressing, on behalf of the local community, our opposition to this proposal.

New newsletter

The second issue of our newsletter is currently (26 July) being distributed.  This brings news from the Community Council meeting held on June 28th.  Its production has unfortunately been delayed because of holidays, not least those of the printers.  We hope that the next issue – due to follow the next meeting on 30 August in Innerwick Village Hall – will be unaffected by holidays and will appear more promptly.

Innerwick Flower Show – 6 August 2011

The following press release has been issued, with details of this year’s flower show:-

A GREAT DAY OUT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY: INNERWICK FLOWER SHOW

One of the most popular dates in the event calendar is the Innerwick Flower Show when family and friends enjoy the many delights of the oldest flower show in the county.

It may be tempting fate, but the weather is almost always kind on Innerwick’s all important date – Saturday, 6 August.  This is the date for your diary – the 138th  Innerwick Flower, Vegetable & Fruit Show.

The warm spring weather and the summer showers have made it a difficult year for gardeners, but nonetheless the flowers, fruit and vegetables are still growing well and organisers and competitors alike are busy preparing for this well-established and extremely popular Flower Show.

Innerwick, just off the A1 south of Dunbar, will be decked in its finest, ready to welcome locals and visitors alike. The doors open at 2.00p.m., with an Official Opening at 2.15p.m. and then the fun begins.  It is not just the adults who enjoy the magnificent displays of Flowers, Fruit and Vegetables – the Juvenile Section will provide much fun and interest for young and old alike.

Each year this wonderful Show grows and develops and this year will be no exception.   A fun dog show, children’s entertainment, together with a selection of stalls and games always ensure children and adult’s alike have a happy, busy afternoon.  Once again Eyemouth Pipe Band will be in attendance, providing a wonderful selection of music whilst you enjoy a leisurely stroll around the varied stalls, or sit peacefully in the sun.  The Fun Dog Show always provides much mirth and merriment and the entire day is a great occasion for the whole family – a great get together.  Chris Wish, childrens’ entertainer will be on hand to keep us all amused.

It is to be hoped that a warm afternoon will encourage people to the refreshment tent but even if it is a little cooler a warming cup of tea accompanied by some of the   delicious scones and cakes supplied are a must.  Just in case this doesn’t fill the gap, don’t forget to visit the wealth of different stalls and purchase some of that wonderful home-baking and bric-a-brac.

Here’s hoping for a wonderful day both for exhibitors and those visiting. Sponsorship is vital and Innerwick Horticultural Society expresses their gratitude and thanks to all who provide sponsorship, British Energy, Community Windpower, Thurston Holiday Home Park, Viridor and all the many individuals who kindly donate and participate in ensuring Innerwick Flower Show is enjoyed by us all.

Saturday, 6 August is the date to remember!

– it is a great family day out and one you will all enjoy.  Official Opening 2.15p.m.
