To enhance environmental sustainability, in relation to current site operations and in longer-term aftercare, Viridor is looking to invest in a local, modern Leachate (waste water) management solution sympathetic to Oxwellmains.

The site for the proposed Leachate Treatment Plant (LTP) is located within the boundary of the landfill site and is centred on grid reference NT 71342 75362.

The development would see leachate treated on-site using reed beds and granular filters. Comprising approximately six storage and treatment tanks the compound would be located on the southern side of the landfill, between the existing haul road and periphery screening bunds. Since 1997, Viridor has managed leachate (waste water) at its Oxwellmains landfill site by storage in nearby lagoons before transporting liquid off-site by road for treatment by Scottish Water.

Viridor conducted a programme of pre-application consultation in April 2014. In addition to public notices placed in the East Lothian Courier and East Lothian News, Viridor provided a full briefing to its community liaison group, with public stakeholder events held at Halhill Sports Centre, Dunbar and Innerwick Residential Centre, Innerwick.

A planning application (15/00022/PM) was submitted to East Lothian Council in January 2015 and will be determined by the authority in due course.
